#Review Cross Falls Box Set by Mallory Crowe #Romance

Title: Cross Falls Box Set
Author: Mallory Crowe
Rating: 5 stars

I love Mallory Crowe's books and this box set was a perfect example of why.

This is a three book serial series, so I recommend getting the box set instead of purchasing them one at a time. Once you get started, you're not going to want to stop. I know I didn't. Every chance I got, I was reading. I ended up finishing the entire series in two days.

The story was full of twists and turns. It revolves around a love triangle of sorts and a mystery involving Gabrie's past. Normally I don't care for love triangles, but this one didn't make me want to bang my head against a wall and scream at the heroine to pick one already. The mystery was well fleshed out and I have to admit I didn't figure out who the 'bad guy' was until right before the characters did. I had my suspicions, but there was always a little doubt in the back of my mind.

Mallory Crowe is one of my go to authors and she didn't disappoint with this series. I can't wait to dive into more from her.

I would recommend this series to those looking for a sexy romantic suspense novel that will keep you one your toes.

Author Bio

Mallory Crowe has lived in Michigan her whole life and has been in love with romance ever since she'd skip to the end of every novel, just to make sure the hero and heroine survived and ended up together. She lives with her husband and three dogs. When she's not writing, she's spending too much time in front of the TV, hiking, or working with various animal rescues.

Sexy Beast by Piper Rayne - On Sale For A Limited Time #NewRelease #Romance

Release Date: July 17, 2017

It’s time

Time to get a life.

Time to start over.

Time to move beyond the past.

The guys in the Single Dads Club would tell you it was time years ago, but until recently, the risk of hurting my little girl outweighed the benefit of getting a piece of ass.

Now that I have a tween daughter on my hands? It’s becoming more apparent with every poster hung on the wall, every fight over wearing make-up and every uncomfortable conversation about puberty, that at least one of us needs a female touch in our lives.

Jesus. I can’t even think the words ‘female touch’ without thinking of her.
Charlotte Rose. Charlie.

She’s everything I shouldn’t want, but someone needs to tell that to my damn libido because every time she’s around I have a constant case of blue balls.

There’s a list of reasons why I shouldn’t give into what I feel—she’s my best friend’s little sister, she’s seen me at my most vulnerable, and the biggest one—she’s the first person in twelve years who has the potential to break me.

#Review Beautiful Ruin by Amy Olle

Title: Beautiful Ruin
Author: Amy Olle
Rating: 5 stars

Beautiful Ruin is one of those books you don't want to put down. I was up until 3am reading, and even then had trouble stopping. It's the best book I've read in a while.

I loved, LOVED, Noah and Mina. They had such amazing chemistry and both their backstories added so much to the story. I knew pretty early on that something was up with Mina, but I had no idea what until everything started to unravel in her world. And I like how the author didn't gloss over it and make it all better over night.

Noah was one of those book boyfriends you just can't help but fall in love with. He was exactly the man Mina needed and it didn't hurt that he had a sexy Irish accent either.

If you couldn't tell already, I highly recommend this book. It's emotional and sexy and I can't wait to read more of this series.

Author Bio

Amy writes sexy contemporary romance novels filled with charmingly flawed characters and cozy settings. Her first book, Beautiful Ruin, is the first in a series about five Irish-born brothers sent as children to live with family on a remote island off the coast of northern Michigan. She is delighted to put her Psychology degrees to good use writing romance. The day she defended her thesis, she picked up Diana Gabaldon’s, Outlander, and discovered the genius of romance novels.
Amy lives in Michigan with her long-suffering husband, brilliant son, and (female) turtle named George. Her favorite thing about Michigan’s long, cold winters is that they provide plenty of incentive to stay indoors and read (or write) a good book.
In between writing sessions, Amy drinks too much wine, obsesses over college football and basketball, and feels guilty for reading when she should be writing. All the while, she’s busy brainstorming her next plot twist with Mr. Olle.

#Review More Than A Kiss by Stacey Joy Netzel

Title: More Than A Kiss
Author: Stacey Joy Netzel
Rating: 4 stars

I picked up this book several times, but every time I started reading it something would pull me away. It's taken me months to dig into this one, but I'm glad I was persistent.

This is the first book I've read by Stacey Joy Netzel, but I doubt it will be my last. I enjoyed all the characters, even the more minor ones. They were all well developed with their own backstory, which helped to support both the hero and the heroine's personalities.

Sophie and Zach were quite a pair. On the outside they looked like polar opposites, but they ended up being more alike than either of them realized. I love the set up for this story. It pulled me in right from the first couple of chapters. These two were both very likable, even when he was teasing her with a nickname she wasn't all that fond of.

If you're looking for a fun beach read, I would definitely recommend More Than A Kiss.

Author Bio

I was born in Wisconsin and grew up in the Crivitz area. My love of reading stemmed from a number of things. Mom always encouraged reading and Dad encouraged work. It wasn’t that Dad didn’t like us reading (me, my two older sisters and younger brother), but he taught us not to be afraid of work. Me, I’d rather be riding my horse, Kaleb, or reading. Dad knew if I couldn’t be found stacking wood, raking leaves, or peeling pine logs for the house we were building, then I was most likely hiding somewhere with a book. (Walter Farley’s Black Stallion books will forever hold a special place in my heart.)

In school, my reading teachers, Mrs. Hutchinson (6th grade) and Mrs. Sherman (8th grade), encouraged me even more. All through high school I wrote stories, though the only one I ever finished was a hundred and eighty page romance about Corey Haim for creative writing class. I still think the only reason I received an A was because Mr. Murray didn’t want to read the whole thing. (I’ve read it since then — I wouldn’t blame him.)

I started seriously pursuing publishing in 2004 and held my first published book in my hands in 2007. Since then, I’ve published over 25 works, including a few novellas and short stories. After years of fitting in my writing while working as a Travel Agent, since 2012 I’ve been blessed to be able to add full-time writer to my list of titles (wife and mom).

#Review of Dangerously Hot by Lynn Raye Harris

Title: Dangerously Hot
Author: Lynn Raye Harris
Rating: 4.5 stars

This is yet another reason why I love to read Lynn Raye Harris' books. I know when I pick one up that I will be treated to a great story that will have me not wanting to say goodbye to the couple.

Dangerously Hot brought together Lucky, the widow of a former HOT teammate, and his best friend, Kev. Reading this one was kind of interesting, mainly because I'm currently writing a story with a similar bases. Even though the stories go in completely different directions, there were some similarities, including the guilt Kev feels about his feelings toward Lucky.

As with all of Lynn Raye Harris' characters, I loved Kev and Lucky together. They brought out the best in each other and it was so clear from the beginning that there was more than friendship there, even though neither wanted to admit it at first.

One of the ways I can tell I loved a book is that when I finish it I immediately want to go back and re-read my favorite scenes. That was definitely the case with this one.

If you're looking for a sexy romantic suspense novel with hot military men, I would highly recommend this one.

Author Bio

Lynn Raye Harris is the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the HOSTILE OPERATIONS TEAM SERIES of military romances as well as 20 books for Harlequin Presents. A former finalist for the Romance Writers of America's Golden Heart Award and the National Readers Choice Award, Lynn lives in Alabama with her handsome former military husband and two crazy cats. Lynn's books have been called "exceptional and emotional," "intense," and "sizzling." Lynn's books have sold over 2 million copies worldwide.

Do You Judge A Book By Its Cover? #SelfPublishing #Marketing

We've all heard the phrase 'never judge a book by its cover'. But the truth of the matter is most readers do judge. It's the first impression they have of your novel. And if you're going to self publish your own novel, that's something you need to keep in mind.

Marketing is a scary word for most writers. The vast majority tend to be introverts who'd rather spend their days typing out words than thinking about how to sell their book. But the reality is, if you're going to self publish your novel, you do need to think about these things. One of the first marketing decisions you will need to make is choosing a cover.

I wrote a blog post a while back about the different options an author has when choosing a cover: pre-made, stock, or custom, so I won't be covering that again. If you'd like to check out the other blog post click HERE.

A lot more goes into choosing a cover for your novel that just deciding on whether to use a pre-made cover, a cover with a stock photo, or doing a custom shoot.

Here are some things to consider:

  • Genre. It's always a good idea to research your genre. By that I mean go to Amazon and find out what books are in the top 100 Paid in your category. Look at the covers and look for similarities, themes. Are there certain colors that are common? Do most of them have people on them? Objects? Is the font fancy script or more of a block type lettering? It may not seem all that important now, but keep in mind this is what readers are buying in your genre. They are buying it for a reason.

  • What Fits Your Story? While you want a cover that fits into your genre, what you don't want is a cover that says nothing about your story. If you're writing a fantasy novel about witches, you probably don't want a half naked man on the cover. There are also some readers that are picky about hair and eye color, so if you're using models on your cover keep that in mind when selecting the picture/models you're going to use.

  • Branding. This is a step many authors forget about when it comes to marketing, but your brand as an author is very important. When it comes to covers, the thing to remember is consistency. This can take on a few forms.
    1. Your Name. It sounds simple enough, right? But making sure your name appears in the same font on all your covers is important. It's like your signature that identifies you as being you. It also looks neater and more professional when you have multiple books in one place.
    2. Titles. This one is a little more flexible. Not every title of every book you write has to be in the same font or have the same cadence to it, etc. But if the books are part of the same series, then having that consistency is very important. Again, it looks more professional, but it's also a signal to readers that these books belong together, so if they like one then they will most likely like the other. Below are two of my series. You can clearly see by the design and titles which books belong together.

Details matter and your book cover needs to convey the story you want it to to potential readers. Consider what appeals to you when you're browsing through a bookstore for a new book.

  • Thumbnail. What is a thumbnail, you might ask? A thumbnail in the book world is how we refer to the small picture of your book cover on Amazon. Considering most authors sell more than half their ebooks via Amazon's website, how your book looks on the site while readers are scrolling through potential books to buy is important. The picture needs to be clean, crisp, and it needs to draw the eye of the reader.
Some common mistakes I see are:
    1. The Cover Is Too Dark. It's fine that your book has dark elements, but if a reader can't see those elements on the cover then that doesn't help you sell that book.
    2. The Font Is Too Small. People need to be able to read what's on your cover, even at a thumbnail size. As you can see from the covers I posted above, the titles are clear and stand out. Some authors choose to make their name more prominent and if you've built up a big enough fan base that makes sense as your name will automatically draw readers. Personally, I prefer the story take center stage, so I want my titles to be what stands out the most.
    3. There's Just Too Much Going On. If your cover has too much stuff on it, it ends up looking like a garbled mess...especially on a thumbnail. Keep it simple. Your cover should be a snapshot of your story. Once you get a potential reader to click that buy button, then they can discover all the other fascinating elements you have within your book.

Don't forget your cover is most likely the first thing readers will notice. First impressions are everything. Make it a good one.

Hell no. The last thing I need is another Wright female in my life.

But Emily's good at the job, and she seems trustworthy. I should ignore the desire I have for her. But after all I've lost, I'm tempted by what I can't have and ready to stoke the flame that smolders between us. As long as this Wright sister doesn't betray me the way the last one did.

#Review #Romance Hot Item by Carly Phillips

Title: Hot Item
Author: Carly Phillips
Rating: 4 stars

Last week my husband and I went to a book sale at our local library and I picked up this book. I've seen Carly Phillips books many times, but I'm fairly sure this is the first one I've read. Why I waited so long, I have no idea.

I really enjoyed Riley and Sophie. They were a good compliment to each other. My only complaint was that I really wanted to see more of them. The romance moved very quickly and for what was there it was believable. These two have known each other for a while, so it wasn't as if they were complete strangers who fell in love over night but it did happen fairly quickly. I would have liked to have seen it slowed down just a little.

There was also quite a bit of head-hopping and another romance that gets thrown into the story. I thought the side story between Cindy and Miguel, was interesting, but I'm not sure it was necessary to move the plot along. It did, however, keep me guessing as to whether or not Miguel was responsible for the trouble at the sports agency where Sophie worked.

This was the third book in the series, but I didn't feel lost even though I hadn't read the first two books.

I really enjoyed this book and will most likely read more by this author in the future. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a fast paced contemporary romance.

Do I Really Need An Editor? #writing #selfpublishing

As I talked about in last month's blog post, Self-Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing - 3 Major Differences, when you self publish editing your novel is all up to you. There isn't a publisher with a team of editors and cover designers. That's all on you, the author.

There is a huge debate, and I do mean HUGE, in the self publishing community as to whether or not an author needs to hire a professional editor. I'm of the opinion that hiring an editor is a must. It's not something you should do, but something you owe to not only your readers but yourself as well.

So why don't some writers hire editors?

The two main reasons I hear are:

1) They are two expensive. And 2) They will alter my words and then they won't be mine anymore.

Editors do cost money, sometimes a good amount of money. For a 100,000 word manuscript you will normally be looking at paying somewhere between $500-$1,000 depending on the editor you choose to use.

To put this in perspective,

- If you sold your book for $2.99 on Amazon, you'd need to sell 478 copies just to cover the cost of editing if your editing cost you $1,000.

- If you sold your book for $3.99, you'd need to sell 358 copies.

- If you sold your book for $4.99, you'd need to sell 287 copies.

Also, keep in mind this is only what you'd need to sell to cover editing costs. This doesn't include the cost of your cover, formatting, or any marketing you choose to do.

So why spend the money? Why pay someone else for something you could just do yourself?

To put it simply, quality and professionalism. Now, there are probably a few authors that could, and maybe can, edit their own manuscripts, however they are in the minority. Most writers have read over their work so many times while writing it that they either see things that aren't there or miss things that are. There's also the fact that it really is a good idea to have another set of eyes on your manuscript. Something you may think makes perfect sense may in fact have everyone else scratching their head.

For example, I started reading a book recently where the heroine ended up marrying the heroes best friend because when she found out she was pregnant five years before the hero said he didn't want to be a father. As I began reading, I started noticing a few things. The conversations were unnatural and didn't flow well. There were also issues with the pacing. One day the heroine goes from crazy mad at the hero for leaving them high and dry five  years before to being ready to jump into bed with him the next. But what really had me scratching my head was the backstory itself. Halfway through the book (where I finally gave up) we still didn't know exactly how everything went down five years before and how she ended up marrying the heroes best friend. At one point it sounded like the hero 'called in a favor', and then at another part it sounded more like the heroine had approached the friend when the hero wouldn't 'step up.' There was definite confusion, which all could have been worked through with a good editor.

But what about editors changing your words so they don't feel like you anymore?

It's true. There are editors out there who do this. I had one once who completely rewrote the sample I sent her to the point where it didn't sound like me or my characters. She and I did manage to make it through the manuscript we were working on after I sent her a strongly worded email basically telling her to knock it off, but I swore I'd never work with her again.

A good editor should be looking for grammar, spelling, formatting, and other errors along with plot holes and inconsistencies. They should also be looking at how your book flows. Is there a lot of information thrown in that isn't really needed to move the story along? Does something happen where it seems like everything makes sense to the characters but the reader is left feeling as though they're missing something? These are all things an editor SHOULD be doing.

So that brings us back to why I think authors need to hire a professional editor. In a nutshell, if you're asking someone to pay for a product you've created, then you should be presenting them with a finished product. It's sort of an unspoken agreement between buyer and seller. You wouldn't go into a store and buy half a candy bar.

And while I understand that creative things such as writing aren't as subjective as a candy bar, it is a product and if you're asking people to spend their hard earned money on it then they deserve to receive a product that was polished and ready for sell.
